CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Jon Scheyer shared somewhat of an update on Caleb Foster and Patrick Ngongba II following Duke basketball’s ACC Tournament championship win over Virginia on Saturday, March 14.
Foster fractured his foot in Duke’s regular-season finale against UNC on March 7, while Ngongba missed the contest with foot soreness and has not played since Duke’s win over N.C. State on March 2. Scheyer said on March 10 that Foster would be out for a “foreseeable time,” and that Ngongba would not play in the ACC Tournament, hopeful for a return in March Madness.

“Caleb is going to be a little while still,” Scheyer said on March 15. “Again, he’s progressing well. As far as Pat goes, I think he’s been doing his therapy, working with the medical team. They’re just benchmarks. He just has to continue to take it – it’s a day-by-day thing to see how he can handle the next step and whether that soreness goes away. I can tell you he’s improving. I feel very positive about it, but I can’t say what that means as far as later in the week in terms of timing or readiness, because we have to take it step by step.”
Foster is averaging 8.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game, while Ngongba is Duke’s third-leading scorer, averaging 10.7 points per game, with 6 rebounds and 1.9 assists. Cayden Boozer started in place of Foster with back-to-back career-highs against Clemson and Virginia, while Maliq Brown started in place of Ngongba.
Duke (32-2) took down Virginia, 74-70, to claim back-to-back ACC Tournament titles with a seven-man rotation. It marks the first time since the 2010 and 2011 seasons that Duke won back-to-back tournament crowns and also marks the second straight year it claimed both the league’s regular-season and tournament titles.
While neither played in Charlotte, they most definitely made their presence known on the Blue Devils bench.
