Here’s why a loss in the SEC Tournament semifinals could be good news for Florida Gators

The No. 4 Florida Gators men’s basketball team entered the SEC Tournament on a roll.

The defending national champions won 11 consecutive games to close the regular season. Consequently, they earned the top seed in the conference tourney and were projected as a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

After defeating the Kentucky Wildcats in the SEC quarterfinals, Florida looked to cement its No. 1 NCAA seed in a semifinal on Saturday against the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Surprisingly, the Commodores rolled past the Gators, 91-74, to advance to Sunday’s SEC final against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Now, Florida (26-7) awaits Sunday’s NCAA selection show to find out if it will still get a No. 1 seed.

One college basketball observer shared a fact that might make the Gators feel better about the defeat.

Kyle Tucker, director of college basketball content at 247Sports, posted on X that no national champion since the unbeaten 1976 Indiana Hoosiers entered the tournament with a win streak longer than 13 games.

Additionally, Tucker shared that only four NCAA champions in the past 50 years entered the tournament with win streaks of 10 games or more.

Those interesting facts impressed college basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale, who responded to the post: “Wow thanks for sharing – very interesting stats,”

Ultimately, though, the Gators will still want that No. 1 seed. Of the school’s three men’s basketball national championships (2006, 2007, 2025), two began with Florida as a No. 1 seed.
