Wildcats’ buzzer-beater stuns Cyclones in semifinal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Playing in their 10th Big 12 Conference tournament semifinal, Iowa State fell on a buzzer-beater as the University of Arizona claimed an 82-80 win Friday night inside the T-Mobile Center.

Tamin Lipsey opened the scoring for the Cyclones with a pair of free throws. After Iowa State’s 6-0 was briefly halted by a pair of Jaden Bradley free throws, the Cyclones went on an 8-0 run.

Arizona took its first lead on layup from Tobe Awaka. A quick four point swing from the Wildcats put the No. 1 seeded team in front, 37-34, with 94 seconds remaining in the first half.

Milan Momcilovic finished the first half hot, connecting on three 3-point baskets in 28 seconds which put Iowa State up 43-37 at halftime. The junior from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, scored 28 points, with 24 of those points coming from beyond the arc.

Joshua Jefferson grabbed a rebound and scored a fastbreak layup to give the Cyclones their largest second half lead, 50-42, with 17:52 remaining. With 10 minutes and 16 seconds left, Anthony Dell’Orso hit a three to give Arizona a one point lead, 60-59. Dell’Orso scored 26 points off the bench for the Wildcats.

The final 3:42 of the game saw both teams go a combined 7-of-7 from deep. The penultimate triple of the night, by Momcilovic, brought Iowa State within one (78-77) with 1:17 to play. Bradley’s jumper put the No. 2 team in the nation ahead 80-77 with 45 seconds left. Tamin Lipsey knotted the game at 80 with 15 seconds remaining. On the ensuing, and final possession of the game, Bradley released a pullup jumper with a tenth of a second remaining which found the bottom of the net, giving Arizona the win.

In addition to Momcilovic scoring in double digits, Jefferson scored 21 and Toure contributed a dozen – six of those points coming from deep. Lipsey and Buchanan each added eight points, and Nate Heise contributed three points and as many rebounds off the bench.
