Bruce Pearl changes tune on Miami (Ohio), chides ‘propaganda’

Just when it looked as if Bruce Pearl could take his victory lap for discounting Miami (Ohio), he changed his tune.

The RedHawks lost their MAC Tournament opener to UMass on Thursday, bringing their undefeated season to a screeching halt. Pearl told Barstool Sports earlier this month Miami would need to win the conference tournament to earn a NCAA Tournament berth because it’s “not one of the best teams in the country.”

The former Auburn coach faced significant blowback for his comments, even from the RedHawks’ athletic director, who posted “the disrespect is awful” on X.

With the RedHawks’ NCAA Tournament hopes now in peril, though, Pearl came to their defense.

“In spite of the recent propaganda I’ve always been a mid major guy,” Pearl posted on X. “I think a 1 loss Miami of Ohio team should get in! I don’t think they are one of the best 37 at large teams, but are 1 of the most deserving Good for the MAC, Cinderella and March madness.”

It’s unclear what propaganda Pearl is referring to since he made those initial comments, but nevertheless, Miami fans will take any lobbying they can get. They’re right on the NCAA Tournament bubble and will find out their fate on Selection Sunday.
