KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas State basketball’s season is over, and the entirety of the program’s focus is now on finding its replacement for coach Jerome Tang, who was fired for cause on Feb. 15.
The Wildcats’ 105-91 loss to BYU in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament ended a terrible season, but hope is on the way with whoever athletic director Gene Taylor tabs as the program’s next leader.

Taylor has had a head start on his search, becoming the first high-major program to part ways with its coach this season, and should soon zero in on the Wildcats’ next coach. Several names have been more tied to the Wildcats than others, while some have been considered outside candidates.
The job is expected to be filled soon, with a target that may be identified by the end of the week. Here’s another look at the names most closely associated with the job.
Jerrod Calhoun, Utah State
Calhoun is in his second year at Utah State and will have the Aggies in the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season. The Aggies won the Mountain West regular-season championship with a 25-5 record, a year after they went 26-8 and were eliminated in the first round of March Madness.

Calhoun took over at Utah State after seven seasons at Youngstown State, in which he led the Penguins to two 20-plus win seasons, when it hadn’t won 20 or more games in the two decades before his arrival. He was also a successful Division II coach at Fairmont State from 2012-17, leading the Falcons to a national runner-up finish in his final season.
Calhoun has also served as an assistant at Walsh and West Virginia, as well as a student assistant at Cincinnati. He played at Cleveland State and graduated from Cincy.
