Washington star earns back-to-back Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors

After yet another stellar week, Washington Huskies star forward Hannes Steinbach earned his second consecutive and fourth total Big Ten Freshman of the Week award from the Big Ten on Monday afternoon.

The 6-foot-11 German posted gaudy numbers in an up-and-down week for Danny Sprinkle’s squad. First, he posted his 19th double-double of the season before halftime of a 91-72 win over the USC Trojans, setting a conference record for freshmen, on his way to 22 points and 24 rebounds in the game, becoming the first Husky since Noah Dickerson in 2017 to put together a 20-20 game.

Then, as the Huskies overcame a 21-point deficit on the road against the Oregon Ducks before choking the game away in the final seconds, Steinbach was the engine that drove the comeback. After he was limited to just ten minutes in the first half by three fouls, he put together 26 points and 13 rebounds for his 20th double-double of the season.

Those numbers may be enough to propel him to back-to-back National Freshman of the Week awards, too, as Steinbach should also be in the running for several conference and national postseason accolades following a stellar year on Montlake.

He is averaging 18.6 points per game this season and leads the conference with 11.6 rebounds per game, which is good for No. 2 in the nation. Steinbach has also added 1.5 assists, 1.1 blocks, and 1.1 steals per contest, which should help his status as a potential lottery pick in the 2026 NBA draft.

Now, Washington’s brightest star will be looking to lead the Huskies to a third win over the Trojans this season in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday morning.
