Most memorable UNC-Duke moments at Cameron Indoor Stadium

No. 18 North Carolina will play its final regular season game against the No. 1 Duke Blue Devils.

The Tar Heels stunned then No. 4 Duke 71-68 in a thriller at the Dean E. Smith Center, a game that had just about everything. North Carolina senior guard Seth Trimble drilled a corner 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left for the game-winner, capping a furious comeback and setting off bedlam. The Tar Heels trailed for 37:39 and didn’t take their first lead until Trimble’s shot.

It will be a much tougher task for the Tar Heels to beat Duke, especially with Caleb Wilson out for the rest of the season after suffering a thumb injury in practice on Thursday. On top of that, North Carolina now heads into the lion’s den that is Cameron Indoor Stadium.

With that in mind, here is a look at the most memorable games between these two Tobacco Road rivals at Duke’s famed arena.

1961:  From Rivalry to Pure Hatred

One of the earliest and fiercest displays of this rivalry was an on-court fight on February 4, 1961. It was at this UNC-Duke matchup that UNC players Larry Brown and Don Walsh and Duke player Art Heyman started a bench-clearing brawl. It has been suggested that some of the hostility between Brown and Heyman may have resulted from having played against each other in high school. Heyman had also committed to attending UNC before changing his mind and enrolling at Duke.

1968: The Fred Lind Game

North Carolina was 12-1 in the ACC but were upset in three overtimes at Duke Indoor Stadium. Fred Lind, a junior reserve for the Blue Devils, played more minutes in this game than the rest of the season combined and scored 16 points. He made buzzer-beating shots at the end of the first and second overtimes.

1995: Jeff Capel Forces a Second Overtime

The Tar Heels grabbed an 26-9 lead, but Duke rallied and was up by 12 in the second half. Down nine with 6:18 to play, the Tar Heels came back and forced overtime. North Carolina jumped out to nine-point lead, but Duke made four…
