North Carolina star freshman Caleb Wilson will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a broken right thumb during a non-contact drill in practice Thursday and undergoing surgery, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Wilson, one of the top prospects in the 2026 NBA draft, is expected to be fully cleared in time for the NBA pre-draft process this spring as he competes to become a top-five overall pick in June.

The injury ends a standout freshman campaign for the 6-foot-10 forward, who had already missed six games after fracturing his left, non-shooting hand during a Feb. 10 loss at Miami.

Earlier this week, North Carolina coach Hubert Davis said Wilson had recently shed his cast and had returned to non-contact activities, including dribbling and shooting, as he worked toward a potential return. Now the latest setback brings his college season to a close.

Wilson averaged 19.8 points and 9.4 rebounds in 24 games while emerging as one of the most productive freshmen in the country. North Carolina has gone 5-1 during his recent absence. His injury at Miami came just days after he scored 23 points in a dramatic victory over Duke, capped by Seth Trimble’s last-second 3-pointer.

The Tar Heels (24-6, 12-5 ACC) are already locked into the No. 4 seed in next week’s ACC tournament, which will now begin without their leading scorer and rebounder.
