Three takeaways from Wisconsin basketball’s dominant win over Maryland

The Wisconsin Badgers improved to 21-9 (13-6 Big Ten) with their 78-45 victory over the Maryland Terrapins on Wednesday night.

Wisconsin had no issues defending its home court against a Terrapins team that only has four conference wins on the season. Having now won three of their last four, the Badgers carry a ton of momentum into their regular-season finale at No. 15 Purdue.

Ultimately, everything went according to plan in Wisconsin’s final home game of the year. The Badgers took care of business, knocking off Maryland by 33, handing the Terrapins their third straight loss. Here are three primary takeaways from the decisive victory.

1. Braeden Carrington does it again

Carrington has done it yet again, as the senior has now led Wisconsin in scoring each of its last two games. Coming off a 32-point performance in Washington, Carrington dropped 18 on Maryland, which turned out to be a game high.

He may have started 19 games at Tulsa last season, but head coach Greg Gard has found Carrington to be a massive spark off the bench. He’s now averaging 17.5 minutes per game despite not starting a single game this season.

2. Wisconsin’s defense showed up

The Badgers held Maryland to just 30% shooting from the field. No team wants to shoot 17-for-56 in a game, especially when Wisconsin was 27-for-56, connecting on 48% of its field goals.

Three-point-wise, things weren’t much better. The Terrapins were just 9-for-31, as they had the same number of attempts from distance but made four fewer shots. Wisconsin may have only grabbed one more rebound than its opponent, but the field goal percentage was a clear factor in this result.

3. Wisconsin took care of the basketball

Any game can be decided by turnovers, but that’s something Wisconsin didn’t have to worry about in this one. Gard’s squad turned the ball over just three times, while turnovers were certainly a factor for Maryland. The Terrapins turned the ball over 10 times, leading directly to 16 Wisconsin points….
