Texas A&M cruises to critical 96-85 win over Kentucky

The Texas A&M Aggies picked up a massive 96-85 win against the Kentucky Wildcats that should secure their spot in the NCAA tournament. Texas A&M moves to 20-10 on the season and 10-7 in SEC play.

This match was a game of runs from both sides in the first half, with Kentucky first pulling ahead to a 30-18 lead off the backs of a 17-6 run over seven minutes while the Aggies couldn’t drill a shot. The Wildcats had a golden opportunity to turn this game into a road blowout, but costly turnovers swung the game back in A&M’s favor.

Staring at a 12-point deficit with just over eight minutes to spare in the first period, the Aggies launched a 13-0 run of their own to take the lead. Ruben Dominguez drilled three triples and a pull-up midrange jump shot over this span, adding 11 of his 14 first-half points over this run.

The Aggies would not let up, turning this 13-0 run into a 27-3 run to close the half with a 45-33 lead. A Denzel Aberdeen layup and a Malachi Moreno free throw were Kentucky’s only points over the last eight minutes of the first half.

Texas A&M would not look back in the second half, immediately building upon its lead. The game would not return to a single-digit contest until the final two minutes.

Rylan Griffen led the team in scoring tonight with 21 points on 7/12 from the field and 4-8 from three. He took control in the second half, dropping 13 of his points in the second while only missing one shot (2/2 from two, 2/3 from three, 3/3 from the charity stripe).

Ruben Dominguez chipped in with 17 points on 5/8 from three in what was a much-needed hot performance after a disastrous February for the sharpshooter. Dominguez averaged just 4.4 points a night on 23.3% shooting from deep and 24.4% from the field over the past month. Nothing was falling, and consequently, the Aggies’ offense suffered. With their lead shooter back on track, Texas A&M’s offense ran smoothly tonight.
