Where Auburn lands in USA TODAY’s latest NCAA Tournament outlook

Auburn basketball’s March Madness hopes suffered another critical blow Tuesday when the Tigers dropped another Quad 1 opportunity to Oklahoma on the road, 91-79. With three regular-season games remaining, what is Auburn basketball’s NCAA Tournament outlook?

USA TODAY Sports released its latest bracketology ahead of this weekend’s action. Auburn remains in the mix, but has fallen to the No. 11 seed in the South Regional and is paired with No. 6 St. John’s, a team the Tigers have already beaten this season.

Auburn basketball’s case for remaining an NCAA Tournament hopeful stems from its strength of schedule. Auburn plays the toughest schedule in the country, according to KenPom, and has the fourth-toughest in ESPN’s Basketball Power Index, with an astounding 16 Quad 1 games. However, Auburn has not fared well against said competition. Entering Friday, Auburn is 5-11 against Quad 1 competition, with wins over No. 6 Florida, No. 18 Arkansas, No. 23 St. John’s, No. 28 NC State, and No. 29 Kentucky. Auburn is also 2-2 against Quad 2 squads, with wins over Ole Miss and Texas and losses to Texas A&M and Mississippi State, its worst in terms of NET rankings.

Auburn has one Quad 1 game remaining, its regular-season finale at Alabama. Before then, Auburn will face Quad 3 Ole Miss at home one Saturday and Quad 2 LSU on Tuesday. Auburn needs to win its next two games to keep its March Madness hopes alive, but a win over Alabama on March 7 in Tuscaloosa will do wonders for its NCAA Tournament stock.
