Villanova bounces back with important win over Butler

Villanova’s backcourt has been inconsistent over the course of the season — and this includes Devin Askew off the bench.

The sixth-year transfer has struggled to find his shot in recent weeks, but when the team needed it the most, Askew stepped up.

Leading 59-57 in the second half, Askew knocked down a three before taking advantage of a Butler turnover with a layup. After a Malachi Palmer steal, Askew pulled up from 25 feet to knock down another three and put Villanova back up double-digits. This 8-0 run by Askew gave the Wildcats enough breathing room to close out the game.

Askew finished with 16 points, including 4-for-7 from three-point range, in 22 minutes as Villanova earned an 82-73 win over Butler at the Finneral Pavilion.

The Wildcats have not yet had all guards click on the same night. On Wednesday, the Wildcats took a step closer to accomplishing this goal in a spot where the team needed a win.

The Wildcats (22-6, 13-4) came into the night off a disappointing performance against UConn on Saturday night. With St. John’s on the horizon, it was important for the Wildcats to get back in the win column — and they got major contributions from the backcourt.

Bryce Lindsay finished with 19 points while Tyler Perkins added 11 points with five rebounds and four assists. Acaden Lewis continued to play well, leading the team with 20 points.

The Wildcats started slow but as the first half progressed, the offense woke up and the team carried a 42-28 lead into halftime.

Butler (15-14, 6-12) made it clear that it would not go away in the second half. The Bulldogs opened the half, 26-13, to get within one point with nine minutes remaining.

Villanova was able to play from ahead before Askew went on his run to give the Wildcats enough breathing room.

The Wildcats will be back in action on Saturday against No. 15 St. John’s at Madison Square Garden.
