Efficient offense leads Purdue basketball, seniors to runaway win vs Indiana

WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue men’s basketball evened the season series with Indiana in an emphatic way Friday.

The No. 7 Boilermakers thumped their rivals 93-64 at Mackey Arena. They responded to Tuesday’s home loss to No. 1 Michigan behind big nights from their three in-state product seniors. Trey Kaufman-Renn had 20 points, six rebounds and five assists; Fletcher Loyer added 18 points on five shots (all makes); and Braden Smith had 15 points and eight assists.

Freshman Omer Mayer had a career-high 18 points on eight shots, too.

Here’s what I liked and disliked, and what the win means.

What I liked in Purdue basketball’s win vs IU

IU guard Nick Dorn scorched Purdue for 18 difference-making points in a win Jan. 27 in Bloomington. When officials waved off his 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer for leaving his hand too late, they did not only deprive him of three points. It was his only shot attempt of the half. He went into the final eight minutes having attempted but one.

Every Boiler guard shared some of the attention paid to Dorn. When they also put another starting guard, Conor Enright, on the bench with three fouls, it further limited IU’s offensive effectiveness.

∎ This was a tightly called game, which contributed to the 15 free throws Purdue attempted in the first half. However, that also continued a recent trend. After attempting 20 or more free throws only six times in the first 21 games, the Boilers (22-5, 12-4 Big Ten) have now done it in six straight games. The game began to turn in the first half right around the time Purdue drew three fouls on one possession, including Enright’s second.

∎ Purdue’s seniors from Indiana had their fingerprints all over this win. Trey Kaufman-Renn worked his matchups in the low post, spinning into and-1 layups and muscling his way to his second straight 20-plus point game.
