We’ll get a good idea of whether or not Michigan basketball will be the top overall seed in next month’s NCAA Tournament based on how it does against Duke in Washington, D.C. on Saturday evening. But even so, the likely 1-seed (barring a late-season collapse) is letting its preferences be known as to where it would like to go for March Madness.
According to Matt Norlander, the Wolverines have told the NCAA that if it is the No. 1 overall seed, it prefers to go to Philadelphia for the first two rounds, with the ability to go to Chicago for the next two (again, depending on winning games). As Norlander notes, though Buffalo, New York may be closer (especially if driving through Canada from metro Detroit), these locations would certainly attract many in the Michigan basketball fan base given their relative proximity to the state as well as alumni in those regions.
But, before the Wolverines get to that point, they’ll have to take care of business, and there are still a lot of big quad 1 games left on the schedule. This weekend’s tilt vs. Duke, a road trip to Illinois, and a home game against Michigan State all qualify as quad 1 games, while Iowa is likely to be one by the time it rolls around, and Minnesota is not.

Then, there’s also the Big Ten Tournament, but it’s unlikely that it will change much about the seeding, unless the Wolverines get an unlikely early exit.
