NCAA president Charlie Baker has found a way to annoy just about every college basketball fan base in the country this Thursday.
Back in July 2025, the committees for men’s and women’s Division I basketball discussed the possibility of expanding the NCAA tournament to 72 or 76 teams. Despite the NCAA’s wishes, the field for this year’s tournament will remain unchanged.

While at NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis this afternoon, Baker revealed that he’s still pushing for an expanded format.
“We’re still talking to the various players in this one,” Baker said, via ESPN’s Jeff Borzello. “I said all along that I think there are some very good reasons to expand the tournament. So, I would like to see it expand.”
Baker was unwilling to commit to a 72 or 76-team field for the 2027 tournament.

Wrong move for the NCAA?
Although an expanded field for the NCAA Tournament hasn’t been finalized, the public is already voicing their disapproval online. They believe the current 68-team format for March Madness is perfect, so why change it?
“Most people think the NCAA sucks and yet they suck so much worse than you can imagine,” Michael Borkey of SportsTalk Mississippi said.
“Charlie… no one else wants this,” Matt McGavic of Louisville Cardinals On SI replied.

“More teams means less magic… keep it at 68,” one fan commented.
“Please stop, we don’t need anymore teams. 68 is plenty each year,” a second fan wrote.
“The NCAA Tournament is awesome. Don’t try to fix something that isn’t broken,” another fan said.
Only time will tell if the NCAA alters its plans for March Madness.
