UConn men’s basketball drops to No. 6 in latest AP Poll

After seeing its 18-game winning streak get snapped on Friday, UConn men’s basketball fell down three spots from No. 3 to No. 6 in the latest AP Top 25. The 22-2 Huskies are coming off a dominant home win over Xavier and a tough road loss to then- No. 22 St. John’s Friday night.

Houston, Duke and Iowa State jumped up to the third, fourth and fifth spots respectively to surmount UConn, even with the Blue Devils falling on the road at North Carolina.

St. John’s remains the only other Big East team ranked in the poll this week, checking in at No. 17 after knocking off the Huskies at Madison Square Garden. The 18-5 Red Storm have won nine-straight games after losing a heartbreaker to Providence and have been playing their best basketball of the year as of late. Villanova is still the only other school in the conference to receive any votes, checking in as the fifth team out of the poll.

Arizona, UConn’s only non-conference loss of the season, remains at No. 1 after defeating Oklahoma State over the weekend, but the Wildcats have a tough road ahead of them to close the month. The Huskies have four wins this season against teams currently ranked in the poll in No. 8 Illinois, No. 9 Kansas, No. 14 Florida and No. 22 BYU.

The Huskies return to action this week on Wednesday as UConn travels to Indianapolis for a road game against Butler before returning home on Saturday night for a clash with Georgetown at Gampel Pavilion.

Looking at NET rating, UConn dropped down one spot to No. 8 from last Monday. The Huskies are one of 12 teams in the country with at least five Quad One victories and no losses outside of the top quadrant. Looking ahead to this next week, on the road at Butler, No. 73 in NET, is considered a Quad Two opportunity while Georgetown, No. 94 in NET, will be a Quad Three game. In terms of KenPom, UConn ranks No. 8 overall, No. 27 in offensive efficiency and No. 5 in defensive efficiency.
