Second-half shooting woes cost Butler basketball in loss to Georgetown

INDIANAPOLIS — A second-half meltdown doomed Butler basketball on Saturday afternoon as it fell to to Georgetown, 77-64, at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

The Bulldogs had multiple chances to swing the momentum in their direction as they trailed for most of the game, but couldn’t capitalize on easy layups. Jamie Kaiser Jr. led Butler with 19 points, while Finley Bizjack trailed with 16.

Butler is now 13-9 and 4-7 in the Big East after shooting 5 for 33 (15.2%) in the second half, and not hitting a shot over the final 7 minutes, 27 seconds (14 misses).

Here are three observations:

Jamie Kaiser Jr keeps Butler in game

For most of the game, Kaiser was the player that kept Butler within striking distance — and got fans at Hinkle Fieldhouse on their feet.

Kaiser got the Bulldogs within four points near the end of the first half with a fast-break dunk off a Georgetown turnover, putting the momentum on Butler’s side going into halftime. Then, after Butler’s deficit grew to double digits again in the second half, he got the Bulldogs within six points with a 3-pointer with seven minutes left.

But Kaiser’s well-timed shots, and season-high 19-point day, weren’t enough for the Bulldogs.

Georgetown gets hot from 3-point range in first half

Georgetown came into Hinkle Fieldhouse shooting 32% from 3-point range on the season, but the Hoyas found another gear in the first half.

The Hoyas exploited the Bulldogs’ defensive indifference on the 3-point line in the first half, making six of their first nine 3-pointers and contributing to what became as much as an 11-point lead over Butler in the first half. At halftime, Georgetown had a 7-of-13 mark from 3-point range, with Caleb Williams and KJ Lewis knocking down two each.

The Hoyas’ 3-point shooting cooled in the second half, though, making three of seven. But that early 3-point success gave Georgetown a lead that it could carry through to the end of the game.
