It’s tough to win a top 10 rivalry matchup when you play one of your worst halves of the season. And that’s exactly what happened to Michigan State on Friday night.
A brutal first half was too much to overcome for MSU, who dropped a rivalry game to Michigan, 83-71.

Michigan State was simply dominated from the opening tip, with the Wolverines jumping out to an early eight-point lead only a few minutes into the game. The Spartans struggled offensively with 11 first half turnovers, and shooting 27 percent from the field in the opening half, which led to a 16-point halftime deficit.
The Spartans came rallying back in the second half, and even took a lead at one point, but they did not have enough legs to close this one out. Following the Spartans taking a 57-55 lead, Michigan scored on seven of their next eight possessions, putting MSU away.
Jeremy Fears led the way for the Spartans, scoring 31 points and getting seven assists. Jaxon Kohler finished with 12 points, while Coen Carr and Jordan Scott both had 10 points a piece.
Michigan State will return to action on Wednesday in a road trip to Minnesota. Tipoff from Minnesota is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, with the game set to be televised on Big Ten Network.
