Typically we take a look at the stats following a game for our ‘By the Numbers’ series but moving forward we will start mixing in a preview that takes a look at some important numbers heading into each matchup the Boilers will have. This first installment will feature a big game for the Boilers as they hit the road to Bloomington in search of ending a two game losing streak against an Indiana Hoosiers team in desperate need of a signature win in hopes of creating an NCAA Tournament berth.

129.2
Purdue’s defense may have hit some road blocks but the offense certainly has not. Even with back to back losses, Purdue maintains one of the best offenses in the country, according to most metrics. Kenpom has Purdue at 129.2 for adjusted offensive efficiency, good enough for #2 in the country (Illinois is still #1 and at 130.4 following Wagler’s performance). 122.2
To compare, Indiana has a good but not great offense that significantly relies on hitting lots and lots of threes. In that same Kenpom metric, Indiana ranks 28th at 122.2 adjusted offensive efficiency with an offense that takes 29.5 threes per game and hits an average of 10.6 (35.8%). That’s very similar to the Illini but the Hoosiers simply don’t have the same amount of length and rebounding ability.

16.7
The offense is led heavily by Lamar Wilkerson and Tucker DeVries who account for 42% of the scoring for the Hoosiers but take 16.7 combined three point shots of the 29.5 total three pointers. In fact, DeVries takes a total of 12.1 shots and Wilkerson 14.2 shots…
