Florida stays put on ESPN Basketball Power Index after loss to Auburn

Despite a loss at home to Auburn on Saturday, Florida basketball stayed put at No. 10 on the ESPN College Basketball Power Index over the weekend.

All but four teams inside the top 25 saw movement on the BPI over the past few days, but the Gators were not one of them. Frankly, that’s a fortunate outcome considering the disappointing nature of losing at home.

Florida’s overall BPI sits at 19.8 after 20 games, 0.5 points fewer than after the LSU game. Further broken down, the Gators have a 9.5 (16th) offensive BPI — down 0.4 from the last update — and a 10.3 (11th) defensive BPI, down 0.1 from Wednesday.

“The College Basketball Power Index (BPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of performance going forward,” ESPN explains. “BPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Strength of Record (SOR) is a measure of team accomplishment based on how difficult a team’s W-L record is to achieve. Game predictions account for opponent strength, pace of play, site, travel distance, day’s rest and altitude, and are used to simulate the season 10,000 times to produce season projections.”

ESPN projects Florida to finish the season with a 21.9-9.1 overall record and a 12.9-5.1 record in conference play, a 0.9-game dip from the last projection.

Florida remains the team to beat in the SEC, but the loss has opened the door for other teams in the conference. The Gators now have 56.7% odds to win the SEC, followed by the Texas A&M Aggies (23.1%). The Arkansas Razorbacks (14.4%), Vanderbilt Commodores (12.4%), Kentucky Wildcats (11.6%) and Tennessee Volunteers (11.3%) all have above 10% odds to win it, after just two teams besides Florida did so last week.

Florida’s remaining strength of schedule is now ranked 19th in the country. The Gators have a 6-5 record against quality opponents and the sixth-strongest schedule in the country.
