Forget your grandfather’s or even your father’s Virginia Cavaliers, this is not even your twin brother’s Virginia Cavaliers next up for Notre Dame basketball.

When Virginia won the 2019 national championship, it did it with defense first and second and often third. If it had to win games in the 50s and 60s ― sometimes even in the 40s ― that’s what the machine under former head coach Tony Bennett did. Few did it better.

Under first-year coach Ryan Odom, Virginia still guards (first in the Atlantic Coast Conference in field goal percentage defense and 3-point field goal percentage defense at .387 percent and .298), but it also scores. Virginia averages 83.7 ppg., which ranks sixth in the ACC and 53rd nationally. That 2019 team averaged 71.4 ppg., good for 209th.

The Cavaliers defend, but they’ll also get you on the other end. Halfcourt grinder or throttle wide open doesn’t matter. They play both ways. Win both, too.
