Thursday Big Ten Recap: Wisconsin Beats PSU

The Big Ten only had one game on Thursday and things went according to plan, with Wisconsin taking care of business against Penn State.

Let’s take a look at what happened.

–Wisconsin Badgers 98, Penn State Nittany Lions 71

Heading into Thursday night, these teams couldn’t have been in much different spots, at least from a momentum perspective. Wisconsin entered having won four straight and six of its last seven games, with the lone loss coming against Purdue. Meanwhile, Penn State was 9-9, had lost five straight, eight straight against teams rated in the top 300 on KenPom, and had yet to beat a top 175 KenPom opponent. The only question was whether Wisconsin would trip up on the road.

Fortunately for Badger fans, that wasn’t the case.

Wisconsin not only one the game, but did so convincingly, thanks to a fast start. By the time it reached the 10-minute mark in the second half, things were over, with the Badgers holding more than a 30-point lead. Nolan Winter had a particularly great performance, finishing with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists. John Black well also had 17 points, five assists, and three rebounds. Braden Carrington had 17 points off the bench.

The Badgers improved to 14-5 overall and 6-2 in Big Ten play with the win. As noted above, it continued a resurgence for the squad after an underwhelming start to the season. The team has now won five straight, including three away from home, and is up to 35th nationally on KenPom, which is 10 spots higher than the Badgers were roughly a month ago. If Wisconsin can keep things rolling, watch out.

On the other side, Penn State fell to 9-10 overall and 0-8 in Big Ten play with the loss. The group had shown some nice fight earlier in the month against Michigan and Purdue, but that was nowhere to be seen in this one and that could be a frightening with a challenging slate still remaining.
