Monmouth basketball’s lackluster performance against Drexel: 3 takeaways

WEST LONG BRANCH — The atmosphere was off inside the Oceanfirst Bank Center as the Monmouth men’s basketball team fell to Drexel 73-51 on Thursday night, Jan. 15.

Aside from students being on break playing a factor in a less-than-stellar crowd, the Hawks’ energy wasn’t the same from their previous showing. It was just this past weekend when Monmouth took Hofstra, one of the best teams in the conference, into overtime before falling 67-64. However, the vibe from the Hawks was not the same against the Dragons in the first half.

“We got beat by Drexel,” Monmouth head coach King Rice said. “They outplayed us for 40 minutes. Thought we played ok for the first eight and after that we were awful and they took advantage of it.”

“Today wasn’t our day. Ain’t no learning from today. Today, we got mopped by Drexel. They came ready, we weren’t ready. And they beat us badly and that’s what happens when you show up not ready.”

To start it off, there was no Jinup Dobuol seen on the bench. Though the sophomore guard is a role player, he typically can provide an offensive spark. An offensive spark is what Monmouth desperately needed in the first half, only scoring 19 total points.

“No update on Jinup,” Rice said.

A positive from the game for Monmouth was Cornelius Robinson III. He scored a team-high 15 points and found success in the paint. Dok Muordar had 10 points off the bench. The game appeared to already be lost early in the second half. Bench players checked into the game for the Hawks with 2:07 left.
