Where Clemson basketball lands in USA TODAY Sports’ first bracketology

If the NCAA Tournament began today, where would Clemson basketball land in the final 68-team March Madness bracket?

The Tigers have certainly looked the part of an NCAA Tournament team through the first two-plus weeks of ACC play. Clemson (15-3 overall) is 5-0 in conference action after blowing part Boston College, 74-50, on Tuesday night at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Senior Nick Davidson scored 25 points, including 21 straight for the Tigers after the team fell behind early. RJ Godfrey and Carter Welling each had 10 points and eight rebounds apiece for the Tigers, who led by as many as 25 in the second half and held Boston College leading scorer Donald Hand Jr. scoreless in 31 minutes.

Clemson’s blowout win over the Eagles followed a 15-point road win at Notre Dame and a 74-70 victory over No. 24 SMU on Jan. 7 at Littlejohn Coliseum. Entering Thursday, the Tigers are No. 26 in the NET rankings, up six spots from last week, and No. 28 in the KenPom ratings.

Where is Clemson basketball in early NCAA Tournament projections?

USA TODAY Sports’ analysts Paul Myerberg, Erick Smith and Eddie Timanus currently see Clemson as a projected No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament. If March Madness started today, the experts see the Tigers facing No. 11 seed Miami (Ohio) in a first-round game in Oklahoma City in the South Region.

Clemson was a No. 5 seed in last year’s NCAA Tournament and ended its season with a first-round loss to McNeese State, then led by current NC State coach Will Wade. A year earlier, the Tigers were a No. 6 seed and reached the Elite Eight for the first time since 1980.

Clemson is bidding for its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, which would be a first under coach Brad Brownell. The Tigers entered the top 25 polls this week and are ranked No. 21 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll and No. 22 in the AP Top 25.
