LSU men’s basketball falls to Kentucky on buzzer-beater

LSU men’s basketball nearly came away with its first conference win of the season on Wednesday. However, a buzzer-beating shot by Kentucky was the difference and the Tigers fell 75-74 in the PMAC. The loss drops the Tigers to 12-5 overall and 0-4 in the SEC.

Five players finished in double figures for LSU, led by Max Mackinnon and Marquel Sutton. 14 of Sutton’s points came in the first half, thanks to three three-pointers. Rashad King followed with 12 points on five of six shooting from the field. The Tigers shot a respectable 48.9% on the game but just 67.9% from the foul line as they went 19 of 28.

The Tigers got out to a fast start, going on a 12-0 lead over three minutes in the first half to build a 15-point advantage. They were up by 16 at the break and pushed it their edge to 17 points in the first minute of the second half.

Then the Wildcats woke up. They cut their deficit to eight points at the end of a 9-0 run with 17 minutes to play. Back-and-forth play ensued for much of the second half. Kentucky took its first lead on the heels of a 13-3 run.

Over the game’s final 3:29, LSU didn’t make a shot from the field. It clung to a slim lead with under a minute to play, thanks to four free throws. On the game’s final play with 1.6 seconds left, Kentucky was inbounding under the LSU basket. A pass to the opposite elbow found Malachi Moreno, who quickly turned and put up a jump shot to win the game.
