Big Ten men’s college basketball power rankings for January 12

There is a new team sitting atop the Big Ten men’s basketball standings after this past weekend. Nebraska is no longer on the rise, in the sense that the Huskers have been rising all season. They have simply arrived. With Michigan dropping a game to the Wisconsin Badgers and looking very beatable of late, things could run through Nebraska in the Big Ten.

Here are my Big Ten basketball power rankings for men’s hoops after the past week of the continuation of Big Ten Conference play:

One of the best stories in college basketball continues as the Cornhuskers now remain the only undefeated team in the Big Ten. Nebraska is the deepest team in the conference, and they are just missing their signature win. They play hard, this is a complete team, and they are led by their star Reink Mast.

Even with their 2 poor performances as of late, and one of which was a loss, many would argue this is still the best team in the conference. This is still a team that has beaten multiple ranked teams by 30 points; their inconsistencies will ultimately cost them, and their margin of error is not there this season in the Big Ten.

3. Purdue Boilermakers, 15-1

Braden Smith is a star, and he is looking better and better as a scorer. He already has proven himself as a facilitator, being the Big Ten all-time leader in assists. Purdue has all the firepower needed to take on any team in the country, but if Smith can up his scoring output, that makes this team even more dangerous.

4. Michigan State Spartans, 14-2

This is a tough, well-coached Tom Izzo Spartans team. Jeremy Fears Jr. is just as good as a facilitator as Braden Smith. Fears is second in the country, only behind Braden Smith, with his 8.8 assists per contest average. Jaxon Kohler is a double-double machine, achieving and leading scorer for the Spartans. They went toe to toe with Duker and suffered a devastating 2-point loss to Nebraska. Michigan State is legit, as many expected coming into this season.
