Kansas State basketball vs Arizona State takeaways as Wildcats remain winless in Big 12

Kansas State basketball had chances to put Arizona State away, but the Sun Devils remained within striking distance and came out on top.

The Wildcats remain winless in Big 12 play after a 87-84 loss to Arizona State on Saturday, Jan. 10, in Tempe, Arizona. They lost both games on their Arizona trip, including a Jan. 7 loss to top-ranked Arizona.

K-State (9-7, 0-3 Big 12) had built its lead to six after Abdi Bashir Jr. made a 3-pointer with 10:32 left in the game, but the Sun Devils responded with a 14-1 run, limiting the Wildcats to no makes from the field for nearly five-and-a-half minutes. The Wildcats made things interesting late, but couldn’t pull off the comeback.

Arizona State (10-6, 1-2 Big 12) also entered the game winless in league play. The Wildcats return home to host UCF on Jan. 14.

Arizona State hung on after taking control midway through second half

All looked well for the Wildcats, who were making 3-pointers after struggling from deep in their previous game. Bashir made a 3 to go up by six with 10:32 left, but the Wildcats stopped making shots afterward.

Bashir missed his next three 3’s, while Taj Manning missed one and David Castillo missed a pair of layups as Arizona State found its footing and regained its lead. An 18-3 run saw the Sun Devils take a nine-point lead with 4:28 left.

Kansas State’s attempted comeback saw Khamari McGriff get a putback to go with 17 seconds, bringing the Wildcats within three. After the Sun Devils split a pair of free throws, PJ Haggerty made 3 with 4.4 seconds left to put the Wildcats down by a point. The Wildcats had one last chance, down three after a pair of Sun Devil free throws, but Haggerty’s half-court 3 at the buzzer was partially blocked.

Haggerty finished the game with 25 points, while Bashir went for 22.

Kansas State relied on its 3-point shooting

At Arizona, K-State was 8 for 36 from 3-point range, well below its season average. It got back on track by going 13-for-31 against the Sun Devils, only…
