ESPN predicts Clemson basketball’s chances of winning at Notre Dame

For the second straight year and the third time in four seasons, the Clemson Tigers are off to a 3-0 start in ACC basketball play.

The Tigers (13-3 overall) took down 24th-ranked SMU, 74-70, on Wednesday night at Littlejohn Coliseum. RJ Godfrey had 17 points and made six of his seven shots from the field while grabbing six rebounds. Dillon Hunter added 10 points in the Tigers’ victory.

Clemson has won six straight games since its last loss on Dec. 9 to BYU at the Jimmy V Classic in New York. The Tigers are seeking their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, which would be a first under coach Brad Brownell.

Clemson is a projected No. 7 seed in ESPN’s latest bracketology update from Joe Lunardi. The Tigers are unranked in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll but received 29 votes for top 25 consideration, the third most among teams outside the rankings.

Clemson will head to South Bend for its third ACC road contest in four games Saturday when the Tigers take on Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are 10-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play after a 47-40 win at Stanford and a 72-71 loss at California.

Ahead of Clemson-Notre Dame, ESPN Analytics has odds for Saturday’s game.

ESPN’s matchup predictor, which offers a prediction model based on its college basketball power index and other variables, gives Clemson a 59.3% chance to win and Notre Dame a 40.7% chance.

The Tigers are 26th nationally in ESPN’s latest BPI ratings, down one spot from last week. Clemson has a 15.0 overall rating (6.7 offense, 8.3 defense). Notre Dame has a 9.6 overall rating that’s 63rd nationally in ESPN’s metrics.

The Tigers are one spot behind No. 24 Auburn in the overall BPI team rankings and one spot ahead of No. 26 Utah State.
