The 13th ranked Alabama Crimson Tide fell to 11th ranked Vanderbilt 96-90 on Wednesday night in Nashville. The Tide fell to 11-4 overall and 1-1 in the SEC while the surprising Commodores improved to 15-0, 2-0 on the season. Alabama’s Aiden Sherrell was considered a game time decision after being injured in the Kentucky game on Saturday. The big man was unable to go which was a big loss for Bama. On top of that All-American candidate LaBaron Philon missed most of the second half with what coach Nate Oats called “full body cramps”, which required IV fluids. Philon was unable to re-enter the game and finished with 18 points in only 20 minutes of action. The Tide had solved the quirky playing at atmosphere of Vandy’s Memorial Gym the last five times as the visitor, but couldn’t make enough plays tonight to continue that streak.
Without Sherrell available Oats used a starting lineup of Labaron Philon, Aden Holloway, Latrell Wrightsell, Amari Allen, and Keiten Bristow. The Tide started slowly, turning the ball over on most of their first possessions, and fell behind 11-3 at the first media timeout at the 16:25 mark. Bama clawed back to a 15-10 deficit with 11:35 left in the half. Vandy then went on another run and pushed out to a 30-17 with 7:39 on the clock. Philon scored seven straight points for the Tide and got some support from London Jemison, who was playing like a man possessed. Wrightsell, battling a terrible shooting slump, got a fortuitous bounce on a corner three to close the margin to 34-32 with 3:42 left. Allen scored in the lane and Philon struck from three point line and all of a sudden the Tide lead the game 37-36 at the 2:44 mark. The Commodores scored five straight to take a four point lead. Jalil Bethea made 2-2 at the free throw line and Allen scored again to tie the game at 41. Allen put in another hoop before Vandy scored at the halftime buzzer to tie the game at 43 at intermission.
