Purdue Basketball Wins Ugly at Mackey: Purdue 81 Washington 73

Certain games you can just feel that the opponent is overmatched. You can feel that no matter what they do they aren’t going to walk out of Mackey Arena victorious. This was one such game. Poor Washington. They came into Mackey Arena with numerous injuries and only dressed nine guys (and one of them, an IU transfer no less, had his pants on backwards) against the 5th ranked team in the country. Unfortunately for Purdue, due to some sloppiness, foul trouble, and poor shooting the game was much closer than it should have been.

That’s just a bad omen for the Huskies.

John Wooden Memorial Player of the Game (JWMPOTG): CJ Cox earns this one for me tonight. He was all over the court on defense, played with great energy and hit a big time shot with 2:43 left in the game to give Purdue a little breathing room when this one started to get away from them. He finished the game with 11 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 0 turnovers.

Things started off just about as perfect as possible in the first half if you’re a Purdue fan. Purdue jumped out to a 9-0 lead and Washington had five turnovers in the first five minutes. Washington looked overmatched and the Purdue offense looked fluid and the passing was crisp. Things did get a little touchy later on in the first half when Braden Smith got called for his second foul and headed to the bench. Then, he came back in, played just briefly, and got called for his third foul. Smith played just 12 minutes in the first half. It was good though to see Omer Mayer take the reins of the offense. If he’s the future of the point guard position at Purdue as many seem to think these minutes will be invaluable for next year’s team. Purdue did commit far too many first half turnovers as they went into the locker room with eight resulting in 11 Washington points. Smith had four of those turnovers.

Purdue’s offense did a great job on the pick and roll and consistently getting easy look at the basket in the first 20 minutes. Washington…
