Tuesday Big Ten Recap: Minnesota Upsets Iowa

The Big Ten had three games on Tuesday and all three ended up being great games. The most notable included two ranked teams on the road in tight contests.

Let’s take a look at what happened.

–Minnesota Golden Gophers 70, No. 19 Iowa Hawkeyes 67

For the game in a row, Minnesota faced off against what projected as a “superior” opponent and found a way to get the job done. The Gophers knocked off Northwestern on the road on Saturday and followed it up on Tuesday with a massive upset over Iowa. The game was competitive from the start and swung wildly between sides in the closing minutes. However, Minnesota’s defense held what’s been a productive Iowa offense to just 0.98 points per possession. Langston Reynolds also came up big, with 22 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

Minnesota improved to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in Big Ten play with the win. It’s the team’s fifth straight win and its sixth win over the last seven games. Outside of a loss on the road to a top five Purdue team, Minnesota has been perfect since Black Friday, which is quite a statement after a slow 4-4 start. The Gophers are now suddenly back in the postseason picture, with some massive home games forthcoming.

On the other side, Iowa fell to 12-3 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten play with the loss. It’s the group’s first slip up since December 11th, when it lost on the road to Iowa State and will leave quite a mark on the team’s resume, considering it had previously avoided any losses to opponents outside the top 12 on KenPom. Unfortunately, that’s no longer the case and it will leave the group with ground to make up as the calendar rolls on.

The Gophers will now prepare for USC at home on Friday. Iowa will try and get back on track against Illinois at home on Sunday.
