Xavier head coach Richard Pitino provides update on Gabriel Pozzato

At his weekly radio show at Dilly Bistro in Mariemont Jan. 5, Xavier head coach Richard Pitino provided an update on injured guard Gabriel Pozzato.

Pozzato, an Evansville transfer, has yet to make his Xavier debut after needing surgery to repair a torn meniscus suffered in the summer.

Pitino said Pozzato has begun stretching with the team and doing “one non-contact drill.”

Pozzato did individual stretches and took a few shots during pregame warmups for Xavier’s game against DePaul in Chicago Jan. 3.

Xavier’s Gabriel Pozzato (left) has yet to play this season after suffering a torn meniscus over the summer.

“He is slowly returning to play,” said Pitino, adding that he’ll trust trainers and doctors to tell him when Pozzato can make a full return.

Pozzato, a 6-foot-7 native of Rome, Italy, was a top 10 scorer in the Missouri Valley Conference (14.9 points per game) last season at Evansville. He was a four-star transfer in the portal, according to 247Sports, before committing to Xavier in April.

“I would hope so,” Pitino said when asked by Xavier play-by-play announcer Joe Sunderman if he thinks Pozzato will suit up during the 2025-26 season.
