UWGB men blow 21-point lead, come back to beat rival UW-Milwaukee

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men’s basketball team wasn’t going to let what happened against Robert Morris happen again.

This time, instead of squandering a big lead in the second half and losing, UWGB found a way to earn one of its biggest wins of the season in a 79-76 victory over in-state rival UW-Milwaukee on Jan. 5 at the Kress Center.

It broke a four-game losing streak to the Panthers, who were picked to win the Horizon League in the preseason but have been hit with some notable injuries since that time.

The Phoenix improved to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in Horizon League play after winning two conference games all of last season.

It’s the first time UWGB has been at .500 since the end of 2023-24.

UWGB senior guard Preston Ruedinger had a game-high five assists in a win over UW-Milwaukee on Jan. 5.

After scoring the first 15 points to open the game against Purdue Fort Wayne last week, UWGB scored 13 of the first 17 in this one and led by as many as 21 with 6 minutes left in the first half.

The Phoenix hit 16 of its first 19 shots and led 46-32 at the break, but the fun was just getting started.

The Panthers scored the first seven points of the second half to cut their deficit to 46-39 with 18 minutes, 43 seconds remaining.

It got even more uncomfortable for Phoenix fans after junior guard Isaiah Dorceus hit a 3-pointer from the wing to get his team within three with 13:35 left before senior guard Amar Augillard hit two free throws 3 minutes later to give UWM its first lead of the game.

The comeback was even better than the one the Panthers had against Wright State on Jan. 1, when they fell behind by 20 and got back to within a point.

It only got worse for UWGB after junior forward Chandler Jackson hit a 3 to give the Panthers a 62-57 advantage with 7:54 left. They still were up four a short time later.

But instead of completely unraveling the way it did when it blew that 11-point lead in the final minutes to Robert Morris on Dec….
