Louisville basketball offensive firepower fails to ignite vs Stanford

STANFORD, CA — Louisville basketball was coming off one of its sharpest offensive performances of the season, dropping 90 points in Game 1 of its West Coast road trip. Stanford was coming off a clunker of epic proportions: 17 points in the first half, 40 total.

Pat Kelsey’s No. 13 Cardinals (11-3, 1-1 ACC) didn’t pack enough firepower to last the full week in the Bay Area. That and persistent foul problems cost them big time in an 80-76 loss Friday night at Maples Pavilion.

UofL started this one shooting 6 for 22 from the field after converting 46.4% of its shots during Tuesday’s dominant win at California. Its top scorer from that game, Ryan Conwell, missed his first nine shots and fouled out with 1:51 remaining in regulation with 18 points on a 6-for-21 clip.

Adrian Wooley, who finished second to Conwell in scoring against the Golden Bears with a season-high 21, netted only three points Friday. He spent most of the evening on the bench after picking up three fouls in seven minutes of run during the first half.

The Cards shot 23.1% (6 for 26) from beyond the arc. But worst of all, they allowed Stanford to get to the line 22 times during the final 20 minutes of regulation; which derailed their comeback efforts.

Up next for Louisville: a rematch of last season’s ACC Tournament championship game. No. 5 Duke visits the KFC Yum! Center for a 7 p.m. tipoff Jan. 6.
