What Kansas basketball’s Bill Self said about Darryn Peterson’s status

LAWRENCE — When Kansas basketball opens Big 12 Conference play on Saturday on the road at UCF, it’s still unclear if freshman guard Darryn Peterson will be available.

Peterson, who dealt with injury issues throughout the Jayhawks’ non-conference slate, has missed the past two games. Overall, No. 17 Kansas (10-3) has played nine of its 13 games without him. And in a recent edition of the “Hawk Talk with Bill Self” show, Self’s explanation for the latest update on Peterson’s status didn’t definitively say if Peterson would play or not.

“He’s practicing, and doing everything,” Self said. “The thing about it is, it’s unfair for people to assume the way something is, because it’s not like that. He hasn’t been 100%. He hasn’t been in a situation where he can do the things that he’s capable of doing, even though he’s practicing. There are still some limitations, and part of the rehab part of him is him practicing. That’s part of it. So, just because he’s practicing doesn’t mean that he’s 100% — although, gosh dang, he looks good to me, and he can do some things that nobody else can do.”

Self added: “I think we’re really, really close. And hopefully immediate, but who knows? It may not be. It may be a little while longer. But certainly, I feel like that he’s put himself in a position that he can help our team if in fact his body just feels up to it. His rhythm is getting back and that kind of stuff, but he still probably doesn’t have that explosion that he had prior to straining his hamstring and getting these cramps all the time.”

Peterson, who’s started each of the four games he’s played so far this season, is averaging 19.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. He has played in a pair of December games — Kansas’ win at a neutral site against rival-Missouri and a road win at North Carolina State. He also played in a pair of…
