Michigan Men’s and Women’s Basketball stand pat in latest AP Poll

For the second week in a row, both the Michigan men’s and women’s basketball teams are in the top six, with both squads standing pat in a rather calm week of college hoops.

The men are still ranked No. 2, right behind Arizona for the top spot. The Wildcats beat a good Alabama team for a semi-away game in Birmingham, while the Wolverines throttled Villanova at home and beat Maryland on the road in a game where the Terps led at the half, but Michigan still won by 18.

That Maryland game will be one of the first on Yaxel Lendeborg’s National Player of the Year resume, as the UAB transfer scored 29 points — a new Michigan high and two points shy of a new career high — to go with eight rebounds and nine assists. You don’t see triple-doubles a lot in college basketball, but Lendeborg came real close to having one.

It should be noted that while Michigan is not ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll — the logic makes sense since Arizona hasn’t lost and the Alabama win is probably better than both of Michigan’s wins — the 10-0 Wolverines are ranked No. 1 in the NET, in KenPom, in Bart Torvik’s rankings, in the USA Today’s Coaches Poll, and on EvanMiya.com.

It’s a slow week for the Wolverines, who have just one game on Sunday against La Salle. That game airs on Peacock at 4 p.m., and the Wolverines will likely be favored by anywhere between 25 and a million points.

Meanwhile, the women’s team is ranked No. 6 for the second week in a row, beating Akron in its lone game this past week, 85-59. In that game, the Wolverines turned 28 Zips turnovers into 26 points, with sophomore guard Syla Swords and junior forward Ashley Sofilkanich leading the team in scoring with 17 points apiece.

The Wolverines, 9-1, have just one game this week, hosting Oakland at Crisler Center on Sunday (noon, B1G+) to wrap up non-conference play.
