MSU part of select group that historically wins national championship

Michigan State basketball is part of a select group of 12 teams that history suggests can win the national championship this season.

The last 21 national championship winning teams have all been ranked inside the top 12 of the Associated Press (AP) poll during week six of the college basketball season. Michigan State is ranked No. 9 in this week’s AP Top 25 poll — which means history would suggest the Spartans are part of a select group of teams that can win the national championship.

Trilly Donovan posted about this unique and fun trend on Monday following the release of this week’s AP poll:

While this is a wild stat and doesn’t exactly lock-in one of these 12 teams to win the whole thing, it’s hard to bet against history of that nature, right? If anything, I’m not complaining that Michigan State is part of this list of teams — even if I’m not about to plan on them playing in that final game on a Monday night in April.

The Spartans are 8-1 on the season, with their lone loss coming in their last game against Duke — also included on this list. Michigan State is considered by many as one of the top teams in the country through the first portion of the season and will hopefully remain among that top tier mix as we work our way into conference play.

Michigan State will next take the floor on Saturday in a road game at Penn State. If the Spartans are truly a national championship contender, they better take care of business and pick up a road win over the Nittany Lions this weekend.
