Jacksonville University women’s team off to best start in program history

The Jacksonville University women’s basketball team keeps stacking victories.

It’s now reached historic proportions.

The Dolphins won twice last week to run their winning streak to five games and improve to 7-1 for the season, their best start for the first eight games since 2021-22 when they were 6-2 after a 2-2 start (then went to 7-2).

The Dolphins began the week on Dec. 2 in Tallahassee, rallying from a 34-25 halftime deficit to beat Florida A&M 70-63.

JU returned home to Swisher Gym (where the Dolphins are 5-0 this season and have won eight of their last nine) on Dec. 6 and jumped out to a 36-20 halftime lead and went on to rout Coastal Carolina 68-51 in what coach Special Jennings said was the team’s complete performance so far this season — especially in the first half, when JU held the Chanticleers to 7 of 36 shooting overall (19.4) and 3 of 20 from beyond the 3-point arc (15 percent)

“I think that’s probably the best first half we’ve had thus far this season, just from everyone being on the same page offensively and defensively,” Jennings told judolphins.com. “We’ve started some games where the defense will be great, but the offense isn’t clicking, or the offense will be great, but on defense, we’re missing assignments. We were just firing on all cylinders today.”

Senior guard Priscilla Williams and freshman guard Tatum Brown led JU with 13 points each, both had three assists and Williams had seven rebounds. Comari Mitchell added eight rebounds.

In the Dolphins’ victory over FAMU, six players contributed to outscoring the Rattlers 25-13 in the third period to take the lead. Carmaya Bowman had two three-point plays, Mychal White scored seven points and Mariah Knight tied the game with a 3-pointer with 2:12 left in the period.
