Florida basketball take another tumble in AP Poll after Duke loss

The latest edition of the AP Top 25 Poll is out and the news is not so great for Florida basketball fans.

Last week, the Gators came two points short of upsetting the Duke Blue Devils on their own court in Durham, but instead took a one-point loss. It was a very winnable game in the final minute after coming back from 15 down earlier, but alas, the Orange and Blue suffered its third defeat already.

Last season, during their championship run, Todd Golden and Co. did not lose their first game until New Year’s Day while suffering their third loss on Feb. 1. Frankly, it should not be all that surprising the difference seen so far this fall, given that the Gators lost three NBA-level guards to the draft last year — plus the loss of another guard to the portal — along with the lack of consistent production from the transfers.

As a result, Florida finds itself down three spots in the AP Poll at No. 18, the same location as the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, bookended by the No. 17 Arkansas Razorbacks and No. 19 Kansas Jayhawks, just as it is in those other rankings as well.

SEC schools in AP Top 25 after Week 5

A total of six Southeastern Conference schools cracked the AP Top 25 this week, but none were among the top 10 teams in the nation.

Instead, the SEC is headlined by the 12th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, followed by the 15th-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores, 17th-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks, 18th-ranked Florida, 20th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers and 21st-ranked Auburn Tigers.

The Georgia Bulldogs (49), Kentucky Wildcats (29) and LSU Tigers (14) all earned votes as well.
