Illinois basketball defeats Tennessee in Music City Madness

No. 15 Illinois (7-2) defeated No. 13 Tennessee (7-3), 75-62, Saturday in Music City Madness at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

Saturday marked a third consecutive loss for the Vols, who converted 8-of-18 free throw attempts. The loss marks Tennessee’s first three-game losing streak since 2023.

The Vols led, 34-32, at halftime after trailing throughout much of the first half. Tennessee led, 49-48, with 11 minutes remaining in the contest.

Ja’Kobi Gillespie was the only Vols’ player to score 10-plus points. He totaled 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. Gillespie converted 6-of-20 field goal attempts and 3-of-9 three-point attempts.

Nate Ament recorded nine points, four rebounds and two assists for the Vols, who outrebounded the Fighting Illini, 46-31, in the contest. Bishop Boswell finished with seven points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Tomislav Isivic and Keaton Wagler scored 16 points to lead Illinois, which forced 13 Tennessee turnovers. The Fighting Illini committed six turnovers.

Tennessee will next play on Dec. 16 versus No. 6 Louisville (8-1). Tipoff between the Vols and Cardinals is slated for 7 p.m. EST at Food City Center. ESPN will televise the contest.
