Markus Burton injured for Notre Dame basketball in first half vs TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas ― This was not what you wanted to see.

This is not what any Notre Dame basketball fan wanted to see.

Leading scorer Markus Burton, the team’s heartbeat, the team’s pulse, prone on the free throw line at the opposite end of the action crumpled and pounding the floor with his hand.

Burton went down a little over halfway through the first half of Friday’s non-conference game against TCU. He had just scored on a runner to the basket to beat the shot clock with 9:48 remaining to bring the Irish within two, 25-23. He landed awkwardly with his left foot.

Burton fell under the Irish basket, got to his feet to run back down the floor, then grabbed at his leg and motioned to the bench before falling at the free throw line. He grabbed at his knee/lower leg and was in obvious pain.

Burton was helped off the floor and taken immediately back to the locker room. He put no weight on his left leg and did not return to the bench for the rest of the first half.

The team’s leading scorer (19.9 ppg.) and assists (32) and minutes (32.3), Burton missed nine games as a sophomore after suffering a right leg (knee) injury in the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas. He returned in early January. Burton was coming off the first double-double game of his career earlier in the week against Missouri. He had 18 points and a career-high 10 assists.

Logan Imes checked in for Burton. There was no immediate word on his injury. As the first half unfolded, and the Irish fell into a double digit deficit, Sir Mohammed and Jalen Haralson handled ball handling duties.

Notre Dame trailed 45-36 at half. It led once, for 20 seconds, the first 20 minutes.
