Furman men’s soccer defeats Portland to advance to first NCAA Men’s College Cup

Furman men’s soccer defeated Portland 1-0 on Dec. 5 to secure its first trip in school history to the Men’s College Cup.

Both teams went scoreless in the first half, even though both had several opportunities to score. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ivan Horvat ended the night with nine saves for the Paladins. Braden Durham scored the lone goal when he impressively chipped the goalkeeper just past midfield within the 75th minute.

Furman coach Doug Allison is in his 31st year and led the Paladins to the NCAA tournament 11 times. He plans to retire after this season.

The No. 16 seed Paladins (17-1-4) will travel to Cary, NC, and play the winner between Maryland and Washington on Dec. 12 at WakeMed Soccer Park.
