Tennessee returned home from Las Vegas only to head right back out the door to take a trip to Syracuse. The Volunteers are up north today, set to take on the Orange in the JMA Wireless Dome. No. 13 Tennessee sits at 7-1 on the year while Syracuse is 4-3. Both teams are coming off of a tough few days in Las Vegas in the Players Era Festival.
Tennessee handled Rutgers with ease, then outlasted Houston. They couldn’t finish off a perfect week though, blowing a late 12-point lead to Kansas for their first loss of the season.

It was a frustrating moment all around, but of course — a teaching moment for Rick Barnes.
“I told the team, I said, I don’t know if last year’s team could have beaten Houston,” Barnes said this week. “But I know one thing last year’s team would’ve won the second game against Kansas because they’d (have) had more of a mindset to do what we need to do.”
It was a reminder of both the pure upside of this group, along with the growing pains that they’re still experiencing. You don’t grow chemistry overnight, but these early tests are going to pay off once Tennessee dives into SEC play.
Up next is a true road game at Syracuse, which will be another opportunity for this group to experience something new. Tennessee has yet to play a true road game, and the dome in Syracuse offers a unique challenge. Adrian Autry is in year three with Syracuse and needing to put up some results. 20-12 in year one was respectable, but Syracuse fell off to 14-19 last season.

The Orange were competitive against both Kansas and Houston, managing to take the Cougars to overtime last week. The were blown out by Iowa State to end the week, however.
“By now we have enough film, obviously we just came out of a tournament where I think they had the toughest schedule out in Vegas, I mean, three of the hardest games, and they competed extremely high level,” Barnes said of Syracuse. “Totally different team. And again, I’m impressed with…
