Where Florida basketball stand on KenPom at the end of November

As November comes to a close, the Florida Gators (5-2) are ranked No. 17, according to the KenPom College Basketball Ratings.

While the Gators started the season ranked No. 2 by KenPom, the non-conference schedule has proven difficult with losses to No. 8 Arizona and No. 50 TCU. Keeping in mind that the NET rankings don’t paint a full picture until the start of December, Gators Wire has decided to wait until now to post KenPom ratings.

A plus-25.70 adjusted efficiency margin is solid, but a closer looks shows that Florida’s offense (120.1, 24th) is struggling more than the defense (94.4, 10th). That makes sense considering the guards’ shooting woes, but a breakout performance from Xaivian Lee provides hope for steady improvement over the next month.

The Gators are nuzzled between No. 15 Michigan St. (+25.86) and No. 17 Illinois (+24.91). Strong performances against No. 3 Duke (+32.05) and No. 7 UConn (+27.97) could easily propel Florida up the KenPom ratings.

Florida is playing with an adjusted tempo of 72.9, good for 22nd in the country. It’s a relatively quick pace, considering the Gators are frontcourt-loaded team. Florida struggled to crack the top 50 for all of last season, however.

If the math stuff is confusing, ignore it. The gist is that positive numbers is worse than a negative number. High luck can mean a lower rating than a record suggests and negative luck often means underperforming.

Strength of Schedule according to KenPom

One thing Florida has going for it is a strong non-conference schedule. Lining up three top-25 battles in the first month of the season is going to keep that number…
