FSU, Oklahoma, Iowa State, Indiana women win at Coconut Hoops event

With Florida State’s losing streak in danger of growing to four, the Seminoles’ top player came up clutch.

Sole Williams scored five key points in the last 103 seconds, and FSU held off Missouri State 85-75 in the GEICO Coconut Hoops on Friday at Alico Arena.

The Seminoles (4-4) felt just as relieved as happy after beating Missouri State for the second straight season. They had lost three straight to Indiana, Florida, and Illinois. Sunday, they’ll play No. 8 Oklahoma.

“A mix of both,” FSU coach Brooke Wyckoff said.

“More relieved, honestly,” said Williams, who had a game-high 21 points. “We needed to win, honestly.”

Williams hit a 3-pointer with 1:43 left to give FSU a 77-73 lead. A little more than a minute later, she made two free throws to increase the lead to 81-73 and put the game away.

“I was really going off adrenaline and trying to get momentum for our team,” said Williams, who bruised her hip.

The Seminoles looked like they might put the game away early. They jumped out to a 22-10 lead after the first quarter. The margin grew to 30-14 but Missouri State (5-2) responded with an 11-0 run. It trailed 43-34 at halftime.

FSU kept its lead between five and nine points before Missouri State rallied to tie the game at 66.

Besides Williams, the Seminoles got seven straight points from Sydney Bowles and a putback by Avery Treadwell. That helped FSU close on a 12-2 spurt.

“Sydney came up clutch,” Williams said. “She stayed level-headed. It’s good to know someone else is as locked in as me.”

Wyckoff said she liked how her team finished.

“As a coach, you like to see your team make stops and find ways to score,” she said. “Keep it close and find a way.”

Bowles added 14 points and Allie Kubek and Jasmin Shavers both chipped in with 10 points.

Lainie Douglas topped Missouri State with 14 points.
