Oregon men’s basketball drops second straight at Players Era Festival

A season after winning the championship game of the inaugural Players Era Festival, Oregon has struggled to be competitive this week in Las Vegas.

The Ducks arrived at the tournament undefeated but lost for the second straight night as San Diego State took advantage of Oregon’s lackluster defensive performance to win 97-80, Nov. 24, inside Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

Jackson Shelstad scored 21 and made five 3-pointers to lead the Ducks (4-2), but the Aztecs (3-2) shot 67.2% from the field (39 of 58) and 47.8% from 3-point range (11 of 23) to keep Oregon in a double-digit deficit for much of the game.

Reese Dixon-Waters scored 22 and BJ Davis had 21 points for San Diego State.

Shelstad’s fourth 3-pointer of the first half tied the score at 15-15 with 12:09 to play. Then the Aztecs heated up on offense as they went on a 12-0 run to go up 27-15 and never looked back.

San Diego State made all four of its shots during that stretch and 13 of 18 over the final 11:27 of the half to lead 51-41 at the break. Its hot shooting carried over to the second half as they made 65.5% from the field in the final 20 minutes.

The same wasn’t true for the Ducks, who opened the second half with a 3-pointer from Shelstad and then missed 12 of their next 14 shots from the field.

Oregon finished the game shooting 40.3% from the field (25 of 62) and 42.9% from 3 (12 of 28). The Ducks also had a season-low 26 rebounds, were outrebounded by eight, and their bench was outscored 46-18.

Oregon forward Kwame Evans Jr. had 16 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Between the loss to San Diego State and the 84-73 loss Nov. 24 to No. 25 Auburn, Oregon led a total of 8 minutes, 40 seconds combined in the two games.
