Kansas Jayhawks freshman Darryn Peterson is widely projected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. But his health has slowed his start.
Peterson is a truly special guard who projects as one of the best one-and-done initiators and floor general among all backcourt prospects in many years. However, due to a hamstring injury, the 18-year-old has only played two games so far while in college.

While he looked dominant in both of those appearances, averaging 21.5 points and 3.0 assists per game, he has already missed significant time for the Jayhawks. Unfortunately, when Kansas takes the court in Las Vegas for the Players Era Festival at MGM Grand Garden Arena during Thanksgiving Week, he isn’t expected back on the floor.
Here is more from Kansas coach Bill Self:
“We’re not going to have Darryn in Vegas,” Self said. “Although we have reevaluated, and he’s right there close — but he hasn’t quite done enough to put him in position to go out and play multiple games in a short span like that. So, we’re hopeful he’s running and cutting and doing all of those things while we’re in Vegas, but not to the point where he’s probably ready to play.”
Self will coach without Peterson against Notre Dame, Syracuse, and a third game based on seeding later in the week.
It is unfortunate for Jayhawks fans as well as NBA draft evaluators, as these are huge moments and tests for the 6-foot-5 guard, and it is unclear when exactly he will return to action.
