BYU Dominates Wisconsin in Top 25 Battle

BYU got out to an early lead and didn’t let up in the second half as they rolled Wisconsin 98-70 Friday afternoon in Salt Lake City.

BYU came out of the gates hitting threes and buried Wisconsin late with an avalanche of triples, shooting 14-34 (41%) from three. BYU was inconsistent from three in their first four games and has easily their best shooting game of the season. BYU got contributions from role players, but were led by 26 points from Richie Saunders and 18 points from AJ Dybantsa. Rob Wright had just 10 points, but dished out 11 assists and grabbed 7 rebounds. Dawson Baker got the start for Kennard Davis and rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points.

BYU’s defense was equally impressive in this game. Wisconsin came into this game averaging 93 points — albeit versus mid-major opponents — but they had trouble with with BYU’s superior length and athleticism. Defending the three was a big focus for BYU, and the Badgers were just 7-29 from long range.

BYU had just 8 turnovers as they continued their theme this season of taking care of the ball. AJ Dybantsa went out of the game with 18 minutes left with four fouls, and the Badgers were able to cut a 13-point lead down to 7. BYU got that lead back up to 20 with AJ on the bench, and AJ came in to put the final dagger in the Badgers. Dominique Diomande, Tyler Mrus, and Khadim Mboup all played 16-20 minutes off the bench and gave various contributions. Mrus knocked down a pair of threes, and Diomande and Mboup each provided 6 points, 5 boards, and contributions on the defensive end that disrupted Wisconsin.

Moved rocketed up 10 spots in KenPom after the win, from 17 to 7, and have 6 days off before a pair of games next week in Orlando. BYU plays Miami on Thanksgiving day and will then play Dayton/Georgetown Friday. BYU will be big favorites in both games, and both should be Quad 1 or Quad 2 games for BYU on the resume.
