Thursday Headlines: Travis Ford Keeping the Faith in UK Basketball

It has not been a good week for Kentucky Basketball.

The Wildcats suffered a brutal loss to Michigan State in the Champions Classic Tuesday night, and morale around the program is not good after Kentucky fell to 3-2 with losses in their only two games against power conference opponents this season. The Wildcats have not looked good on the floor, and Mark Pope has looked completely dejected.

But former Kentucky Wildcat Travis Ford isn’t ready to give up on this team yet. Ford was a guest on Alan Cutler’s show yesterday and offered up some hope for this year’s Kentucky squad.

Ford points out that of the players who took the floor for Kentucky Tuesday night, only one was a starter for their respective team last year with the one being Otega Oweh.

He points out that guys like Denzel Aberdeen, Mo Dioubate, and Collin Chandler are all coming into new roles and it could take some time for those guys, as well as others, to come into their own in these new roles.

I think this team has some significant issues that need to be addressed, and Mark Pope is probably going to have to make some tough decisions and have some tough conversations with regard to lineups, minute distribution and roles, but there is some validity to what Ford is saying.

It could take some time for things to gel together for this team. Sadly, this schedule doesn’t give Kentucky a lot of time to try to find their way. The Cats need to pick up some quality wins, and with a tough schedule like this, losses can stack up quickly and Kentucky can be in a bad spot when it comes to tournament seeding fast.

Nonetheless, there is a lot of work to be done with this team.
