Kansas basketball will be without Darryn Peterson for Duke matchup, Bill Self announces

LAWRENCE — Kansas basketball will face Duke on Tuesday night in New York City as a part of the Champions Classic, but the Jayhawks will be without freshman guard Darryn Peterson.

No. 23 KU coach Bill Self announced in a statement the day of the game that Peterson is not going to play against the No. 4 Blue Devils. Kansas (3-1) is coming in after back-to-back wins at home. Duke (4-0) has yet to lose at all this season.

“Darryn continues to make progress from his hamstring strain,” Self said. “He will be reevaluated at the end of the week.”

That hamstring injury has kept Peterson out of the past two games, victories for Kansas at home against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Princeton. He had played in the first two games of the season, a win at home against Green Bay and a loss on the road against now-No. 19 North Carolina. To date this season, Peterson has averaged 21.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and three assists per game through two starts.

If the evaluation of Peterson at the end of the week goes well, it would put him in a position to play in next week’s Players Era event in Las Vegas. The Jayhawks will play multiple games there, including Monday against Notre Dame and Tuesday against Syracuse before another matchup later in the week. Without Peterson, KU would continue to rely more upon the likes of redshirt sophomore guard Elmarko Jackson and freshman forward Bryson Tiller.
